Become an NRP Provider

1. Meet the registration guidelines.
2. Pre-read the NRP textbook.
3. Complete the online NRP exam within 30 days of the in-person course.
4. Complete the NRP in-person course.To find a course contact the health institution in your area.
5. Complete Essentials or Advanced Individual Integrated Skills Station Assessment during NRP provider course.

Roles and Responsibilities of the NRP Provider

• Deliver care according to current national standards of care relevant to their profession and experience, recognizing that NRP is an educational tool and does not imply or regulate clinical competence.
• Review and perform all components of the NRP Course on a regular basis, including new guidelines.
• Know their own limitations, and seek resources and assistance when required.

Competency: The NRP is an educational program designed to teach individuals and teams who may be required to resuscitate newborn babies. Completion of an NRP course does not mean that an individual is competent to perform the skills of neonatal resuscitation.

FAQs

• How do I print my NRP Provider card? What if I forgot my username and/or password, or have been "locked out" of my account?
  • Login to the NRP database. If you forgot your username and/or password, click "Reset/Forgot your password" and enter the email you used to register for the course. You will get an email with your username and a link to change your password. Once logged in, you will find your card in the "My Records" tab.
  • If you get a message saying that you have been "locked out", then you are attempting to login to the CPS member area. Please follow the NRP datasbase link above directly.
  • If your email is not recognized in the database, contact nrp@cps.ca for help.

• I recently took an NRP Provider course but have not received an email. What should I do?

  There are a few reasons why you may not have received an email:

  • Please check your junk/spam folder, as it sometimes ends up there.
  • You only receive an email with a link to set up your account after attending your first course. After that, you can login to your existing account at any time to print your new card in the NRP database. If you forgot your username and/or password, click "Reset/Forgot your password" and enter the email you used to register for the course. You will get an email with your username and a link to change your password. Once logged in, you will find your card in the "My Records" tab.
  • Your instructor may not have entered the course yet, or there may have been a typo in your email. Contact nrp@cps.ca for help.

• I am preparing for the NRP Provider course. Which lessons am I required to complete?

  8th edition NRP offers both options of essential and advanced courses. Essential courses cover chapters 1-4 (up to and including laryngeal mask (LM) placement) while advanced courses cover all textbook chapters.  

  • Essential course requirements: The learner studies the textbook chapters 1 through 4 and completes the Online Learning Assessment. Within 30 days of completing the Learning Assessment, the learner attends an instructor-led essentials course.
  • Advanced course requirements: After completing the Online Learning Assessment, the NRP Advanced learner is required to take the NRP Advanced Exam (35 questions relevant to material in lessons 5 through 11). Then, within 30 days, the learner completes an Instructor-led Advanced course and attains an Advanced Card. 

  Instructor-led courses will also include essentials and advanced options with individual and integrated skills stations focusing on the practice context of the practitioners attending. Essentials and advanced ISSA will be available for participants according to their course enrollment.

• How long is NRP Provider status valid and how do I maintain my status?

  NRP Provider status is valid for 2 years. However, you may need to renew sooner to meet professional/institutional requirements. You can renew your Provider status by reading the textbook, successfully completing the online exam, and participating in a Provider course.

• I am moving to another province. Will my NRP Provider status be recognized there?

  Yes, NRP Provider status is portable across Canada.
